Curriculum

At Yaddlethorpe Pre-School we follow the Governments Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework 2025, which sets the standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to 5 years.

Our inclusive curriculum covers all 7 areas of learning and development and is designed to meet the needs of each individual child.

There are 3 Prime areas of learning and development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

And 4 Specific areas of learning and development:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

We understand that children learn in different ways and at different times, these are the characteristics of effective learning:

  • Playing and Exploring
  • Active Learning
  • Creating and Thinking Critically

To support our curriculum each child has a named key person who helps them to settle in, they build up a strong relationship to ensure they feel safe and secure and ready to play and learn. They act as a main contact with parent/carer to ensure continuity of care and to meet their individual needs. They plan for their individual ‘next steps’ in learning taking into account their starting points and information sharing with parents/carers.

  • We believe that a ‘blended’ approach in learning is most effective.
  • A play based approach regards ‘play’ as being key to overall development allowing children to learn, develop, explore and follow their interests through hands on purposeful play.
  • Our experienced practitioner’s skilfully extend and scaffold play building on what the children already know and their current interests. They will plan challenging adult directed activities introducing new language, new experiences and teaching new skills. We do this through modelling, giving children time to practice and repeat to consolidate their learning and sharing what they can now do with parents/carers.
  • Planned small group times promote a sense of belonging, an opportunity to share news from home, listening to others and developing turn taking conversation skills, celebrating diversity, working as a team and building self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • We encourage independence through making choices, managing their self-care routines and developing their confidence and resilience.
  • Inclusive practice underpins our curriculum. Every child is unique and has their own starting points, we support them to achieve their potential through a language rich environment with challenging accessible and motivating open ended resources.
  • We believe that outdoor play is an integral part of learning and development. It offers first hand experiences supporting health and physical development. It gives our children an opportunity to explore nature, risk take and show curiosity developing their problem solving skills and independence.

Our curriculum is constantly evolving and adapting as we reflect on our cohort of children focusing on their individual needs and collectively as a group.
